Team Placing: DePaul Dodgeball remains Undefeated
DePaul Dodgeball special events coordinator Ziggy Maloni put a lot of time and effort into organizing this tournament and recruiting teams to travel to Chicago and participate. However, with a city such as Chicago, and a team like DePaul Dodgeball, it was not too difficult to get teams excited about playing in the Chicago Dodgeball Open. We attempted to make this tournament as much fun as possible for the visiting teams. If it was up to us, we wouldn’t have kept score for any of the games; however, realistically there were teams who were actually playing for their “records.”
Leading up to the tournament, I began to get excited to play some of the other NCDA teams that I usually only get the chance to see at nationals. I was not only excited for myself and DePaul Dodgeball, but especially for Moody Bible Institute, as this was their first official NCDA tournament. They had practiced with us a few times and you could tell they were eager to see what kind of talent the NCDA had to offer. Although they did not get any tallies in the win column, I think DePaul Dodgeball has taught them well, in that they had a blast even though they did not come away with a win. I look forward to Moody making more appearances not only at NCDA events, but at DePaul Dodgeball practices as well.
Our matches with the other teams were loads of fun as well. Central Michigan, with their arm cannons and sticky hands, had us outmatched, but I know DePaul had a blast anyway. Michigan State and DePaul have developed somewhat of a rapport over the years and it’s always a joyous occasion when we find ourselves up against each other. I think we surprised MSU with the amount of talent that we brought to the CDO, especially winning a match with them. Western Illinois, the up and comers in the NCDA, have taken Illinois by storm, and although only one of 3 teams in the state, have proven to be quite the competitors. Like MSU, WIU was also not prepared for what DePaul had to bring to the table. We took an early lead, and after a few controversial eventually fell 3 to 2.
This tournament was a success for a few reasons. First, there was enough pizza for all of the teams and officials, and everybody may have been sore by the end of the day, but had stomachs filled with Chartwells deliciousness. Second, we somehow ran ahead of schedule, which was a blessing from the Dodgeball Gods. Lastly, DePaul not only got their first win in my entire tenure as a part of DePaul Dodgeball, but we also remained undefeated because we had an awesome time.
